Women’s Library

Our building was given to the people of Elswick in 1896 as the city’s first branch library and we’re really excited to be creating a new, living library in the heart of the West End of Newcastle celebrating the lives, histories and achievements of women and girls and designed, built and decorated by women and girls.

Understanding of history and literature is dominated by male voices, so our Women’s Library creates a much-needed resource for the North East highlighting how women have shaped their communities and changed the world. The Library will be filled full of women and girls’ words and will be a lovely welcoming space to sit, get warmed by the fire and enjoy loads of brilliant books.
